Solar unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a high altitude and long-endurance flight vehicle, which uses solar radiation as energy and combines with batteries. During the day, solar radiation is converted into electricity through solar panels, part for flight and part for storage in batteries. At night, the electric energy released by the batteries can continue to drive the aircraft to and fro, which can achieve uninterrupted flight.

It has the advantages of high flight altitude and long flight time. The first solar unmanned aerial vehicle in the world is Sunrise 1 developed by the United States. It has 4096 single crystal silicon solar panels with 450 watts of output power. It successfully flew in California in November 1974 with a flying altitude of 152 meters. This first flight marks the coming of the era of human solar flight.
 
Since then, the technology of solar unmanned aerial vehicle has been deeply studied all over the world. For example, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched Helios large-scale solar unmanned aerial vehicle in 1999. Its shape and size have reached a record level, and its wingspan is 75 meters (more than the C-5 with the largest wingspan in service and 68 meters in wingspan). The entire fuselage is made of carbon fiber composite material. In August 2001, Helios set a new world record for the longest horizontal flight of a fixed-wing aircraft, which lasted more than 40 minutes at 29,000 meters.
 
In addition to the United States, funded by the British Ministry of Defense, the West Wind-6 Solar UAV developed by Kennetick Company in the United Kingdom has set a world record for the longest flight time of the UAV. The UAV is 12.2 meters in length, 327 kilograms in weight, 70 meters per second in cruise speed and 82 hours and 37 minutes in idle time. Kenetick later developed the more advanced Westerly-7, which broke the world record for the longest single flight time of a solar-powered UAV in July 2010 and lasted 336 hours and 22 minutes (equivalent to two weeks).

The record has not yet been broken. Due to its excellent performance, the Royal Air Force announced the purchase of the UAV and formally equipped its troops in 2017.

Solar UAVs have a vast military potential. According to professional calculations, if thousands of solar UAVs are used to achieve seamless coverage of broadband networks in major regions of the world, one solar UAV can cover 200 ground base stations. In contrast, the payload of the solar UAV can reach 20% of the take-off weight, while that of the communication satellite is less than 0.5%.

In addition, because of the space-time of several months, the solar UAV can also act as a reconnaissance satellite in the atmosphere, not only faster than the reconnaissance satellite reaction speed (the reconnaissance satellite orbit is relatively fixed, the overhead time over a specific target is very limited), but also more flexible to use, because it relies on solar energy. Power supply, without frequent fuel replenishment, only one seventh of the total cost of obtaining high-resolution photographs of reconnaissance satellites.

For Chinas solar UAVs, the military potential also includes the ability to detect enemy stealth fighters at high altitude after adding quantum radar, and to carry high-resolution optical reconnaissance equipment or long-range radar systems for reconnaissance of enemy carrier strike groups in the ocean, as well as anti-carrier operations for friendly forces.
